A complete guide to Grout colour of marble?

Grout colour of marble

In ceramic tile installation, marble and tile grout are hard, cementitious materials used to fill in gaps between floor tiles. The traditional tile grout colour used to be white, but today’s decorating styles often call for coloured grout to complement or contrast the field marble and you have to consider the Marble polishing cost.

For marble grout that has become dirty or discoloured due to mould or mildew or for people who simply want a change, there are two ways to change the colour without tearing out the entire tile job and starting from scratch. It is possible to change grout lines by tinting them with a colourant or by grinding out the old grout and replacing it with fresh grout that matches your new colour.

What to do before starting

Traditional glazed ceramic or porcelain tiles can only be recoloured using this method. Unsealed natural stone tiles will not work with this colourant, as the staining will virtually always occur.

There are many types of tile dyes, and you should experiment with several before you find the one that works best for you. They may not work well with epoxy grout, for example, while others may be more suitable for grout that has not yet been sealed. Today’s colourants are often a combination of pigments and sealants that are formulated to adhere to just about any existing grout.

It is usually better to change the darker grout colour when changing the existing grout colour.

It takes a lot of effort to change the colour and apply a lighter shade. Some grout colourants come in pens that you can use to paint over the grout lines. It is not harmful to try these, but brushing colourant into the grout lines generally produces better results. Once the excess colourant has dried, the tiles may be wiped clean.

What is the procedure for replacing grout?

Most of the time, you should remove the grout and replace it with new grout tinted to your desired shade. It may be less challenging than you think to install a backsplash or tub/shower surround. The old grout may come out rather easily if it is crumbling, and the new grout will keep the cement board and studs behind the tile dry and in good condition if it is properly sealed.

It is much more difficult to grind out existing grout from large surfaces such as a kitchen or bathroom floor, especially if there are small tiles with many, many grout lines. Consider first testing recolouring to see if it provides acceptable results before removing all the grout.

Grouting materials to be used

In order to complete the colouring process, sponges, buckets, and paintbrushes are required. Painter tape will be needed near the grout cleaner. However, replacing the grout will require Breathing protection, Eye protection, A grout saw or multi-tool with a grout blade, A utility knife, A bucket, a trowel, a grout float, grout sponges, and a foam paintbrush.

How to change the grout colour with a colourant

There was a time when changing the colour of grout that had already been sealed was challenging, but today’s colourants do a good job of changing the colour of grout lines on any type of grout, even if the grout has already been sealed. The key is to thoroughly scrub the grout joints with a good commercial grout cleaner.

Grout colourants consist of a combination of colourant and sealer, and they are typically applied with a stiff brush to clean grout lines.

Scrub the grout lines

To thoroughly scrub grout lines, use a stiff scrub brush and a commercial grout cleaner. Rinse the tiles and neutralize the cleaner by wiping them with clear water after scrubbing them.

When preparing the grout for the paint, the colourant manufacturer typically recommends a specific cleaner. Using this recommendation is the best choice since the products have been tested to be compatible with one another. Making a paste from water and baking soda can also be used to remove dirt from grout lines.

Test the Colorant

Test the colourant on an inconspicuous area of the tile. Let the grout dry after applying the colourant, then follow the manufacturer’s directions. If the colourant should fail to adhere after light scrubbing, make sure it dries to a hard finish. It may not work well, so you may want to consider another type of colourant–a tile outlet center staff member might be able to recommend one.

Clean the grout

Make sure the tile and grout are thoroughly cleaned and rinsed with a sponge and water. Allow the tiles and grout to dry overnight before painting.

Mask Off the Tile Surfaces (Optional)

Painter’s tape can be used to mask the tile faces, leaving only the grout lines visible. Professional tile installers may recommend this step. Unsealed tiles are best prevented from becoming stained by taping off. Usually, it’s best to work in small sections, taping off a few square feet and colouring them before progressing to the next.

Apply Colorant

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using a small stiff brush or a pen loaded with grout dye to apply the grout colourant. Strive to avoid getting too much colourant on the tiles’ faces by working the colourant forcefully into the grout. You can apply the colourant using a toothbrush.

Wipe Off Excess Colorant

Make sure to wipe off any colourant that gets onto the tile faces while the colourant is still wet. With a nylon-faced sponge, some products can be scrubbed off of tile up to two hours after application, provided the tile is well-glazed

Seal, if Necessary

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for letting the grout dry completely. Colourant products are now often pre-blended with sealers, so they do not need to be sealed further. Those that require top-coating with a sealer after drying are pure dyes.

Brush a sealant over the colourant after it has dried completely, as directed by the manufacturer. A sealant prevents discolouration in the future. As a result of the sealer, the grout lines will appear darker and shinier.
